How to Share From Facebook to Instagram (and Cross-Post Both Ways)

How to Share From Facebook to Instagram (and Cross-Post Both Ways)

There's no "Share to Instagram" button on an ordinary Facebook feed post. To get Facebook content onto Instagram you have three working routes: turn on Sharing across profiles in Accounts Center so your Facebook stories and reels can go to Instagram, create the post once in Meta Business Suite and publish it to your Page and Instagram account together, or save your own photo or video and post it to Instagram yourself.

Which route fits depends on what you're sharing. Stories and reels are the easiest to send across. Photo and video posts from a Page are best handled in Meta Business Suite. Text-only posts and links don't translate, because Instagram needs a photo or video and doesn't make links in captions clickable.

This guide walks through each route, the settings you need first, and how to adjust a Facebook post so it doesn't look out of place on Instagram.

Step 1: Put Facebook and Instagram in the same Accounts Center

Every cross-sharing option depends on both accounts being linked in Meta's Accounts Center. Meta is gradually moving people to "Meta Accounts", so you may see either Accounts Center or Meta Account settings. They lead to the same place.

  1. In Facebook, open the menu and go to Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  2. Open Accounts Center near the top.
  3. Tap Accounts, then Add accounts, and choose Instagram.
  4. Log in to the Instagram account and confirm.

You can do the same from Instagram: tap Menu on your profile, open Accounts Center, and add your Facebook account.

If you want to post as a business, the setup is a little different. You'll need an Instagram professional (business or creator) account connected to your Facebook Page, plus full control of that Page. Here's how to connect Instagram to a Facebook Page.

Step 2: Turn on Sharing across profiles

This is the setting that sends your stories and reels from one app to the other automatically.

  1. Open Accounts Center and go to Connected experiences.
  2. Tap Sharing across profiles.
  3. Choose the account to Share from (your Facebook profile or Page).
  4. Choose the account to Share to (your Instagram account).
  5. Turn on the toggles for the content you want shared automatically.

The toggles you see depend on the direction and your account types. From Facebook to Instagram, look for stories and reels. Regular Facebook feed posts don't flow to Instagram automatically. You can still turn sharing off for an individual story or reel when you create it, even with automatic sharing on.

How to share a Page post to Facebook and Instagram at once

For businesses, the cleanest way to "share from Facebook to Instagram" is to never post twice. Meta Business Suite publishes one post to both.

  1. Switch into your Facebook Page and click Meta Business Suite in the left menu (or go to business.facebook.com).
  2. Click Create post.
  3. Under the placement options, select both your Facebook Page and your Instagram account.
  4. Add your photo or video. Instagram requires media, so a text-only post won't publish there.
  5. Write the caption. If you want different text for each app, switch on the option to customize the post per platform.
  6. Publish now, or set a date and time to schedule it.

Meta Business Suite also has separate options for creating a reel or a story, with the same choice of Facebook, Instagram or both.

How to share a Facebook story or reel to Instagram

Stories

With Sharing across profiles set to share stories, each Facebook story you post also appears on Instagram. If you'd rather choose story by story, leave automatic sharing off and check the sharing settings while creating the story for an option to include Instagram.

Reels and videos

Automatic reel sharing works the same way. For a reel you've already posted, the simple fix is to download it (the Facebook app lets you download your own reels) and upload it as a new Instagram reel, which also lets you change the caption and cover.

Keep in mind that the two copies are separate. Facebook's help center notes that deleting a reel on Facebook doesn't delete the version you shared to Instagram.

What about sharing Instagram to Facebook?

This direction has more built-in options, and many people find it easier to post on Instagram first:

  • Per post: when creating an Instagram post or reel, tap Also share on... and toggle on your Facebook profile or Page.
• Stories: tap Sharing options below Your story, or share a published story with Share to Facebook story.
  • Automatic: in Accounts Center, under Sharing across profiles, choose Instagram as the source and turn on posts, stories or reels.

Two limits to know: sharing from a personal Instagram account to a Facebook Page is no longer available (you need a professional account), and Instagram posts shared to your Facebook profile default to the Friends audience, not Public.

Adapt the post before you share it

Fix the shape

Facebook is forgiving about image sizes. Instagram's feed is built around portrait and square images, and reels and stories are full-screen 9:16. A wide Facebook photo looks small on Instagram, so crop it before posting.

Rewrite the caption

Facebook posts often lean on a link. On Instagram, the link won't be clickable, so point people to your bio or a story link sticker. Swap Facebook @tags for the right Instagram handles, since names differ between apps.

Rethink hashtags

A few specific hashtags fit Instagram better than none. On Facebook, most people skip them. Write the hashtags for the Instagram version only.

Remember the audience is different

Your Instagram followers aren't the same people as your Facebook friends or Page fans. Something that works as a casual Facebook update might need more context, or a stronger first line, to land with Instagram followers.

Cross-post to Instagram, Facebook and more with ViralFarm

Meta Business Suite only covers Meta's apps. If you also post to TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, X, Threads or YouTube, ViralFarm lets you create a post once and schedule it to every connected channel, with a separate caption for each. It handles Instagram feed posts, carousels, Reels and Stories, and Facebook Page posts and videos, all on one calendar.

It can also build the content: give it a topic, a link or pasted text and it generates Instagram and TikTok carousels on templates modeled after posts that went viral, which you can edit before scheduling. The Free plan includes 2 channels, which is enough to cover Facebook and Instagram.

Frequently asked questions

Can I share from a personal Facebook profile to Instagram?

Yes, for stories and reels. Add both accounts to the same Accounts Center, then use Sharing across profiles with your Facebook profile as the source. Regular feed posts don't carry over automatically.

Why don't I see the Sharing across profiles option?

Usually because the two accounts aren't in the same Accounts Center yet. Add the missing account first. Some options also depend on account type, so a Page connected to an Instagram professional account sees different choices from a personal profile.

Can I share someone else's Facebook post to my Instagram?

There's no direct way. You can send the link to someone in an Instagram DM. Reposting another person's photo or video without permission can get your post removed for copyright, so ask first and credit them.

Does cross-posting hurt reach?

Meta doesn't say that sharing your own content between its apps is penalized, and it builds the sharing tools itself. It does favor original content over reposts of other people's work. What usually hurts a cross-post is that it clearly belongs to the other app: wrong size, dead links, Facebook-style captions. Adapt it first.

If I delete the Facebook version, does the Instagram copy disappear?

No. They're separate posts. Delete each one in its own app. Instagram stories you shared to Facebook are the exception: Instagram offers a "Delete from both" option.
