What Facebook lets you change about your name

Facebook is built on real identities. Its Help Center asks everyone to use the name they go by in everyday life, the one friends call them, and says that name should also appear on an ID or document from Facebook's accepted list (Facebook Help). So a name generator can't hand you a new profile name the way it can on TikTok or X.

What it can do is help with the parts Facebook leaves open:

  • A nickname as your first or middle name, as long as it's a version of your real name. Facebook's own example is Bob for Robert.
  • Other names on your profile, such as a nickname, a maiden name or a professional name, listed alongside your main name.
  • A username, the part of your profile link after facebook.com/ (Facebook Help).
  • A Page or Group name for a creator identity, a business, a hobby or a community. Profiles are for individuals, and Facebook says to create a Page for a business, organization or idea.

The generator returns 12 ideas per click and runs on Claude. It's free and doesn't need an account. Pretending to be someone else isn't allowed on Facebook (Facebook Help), and the generator won't write names for that.

What isn't allowed in a Facebook profile name

Facebook lists what it won't accept in a profile name on its Names allowed on Facebook page. Checked in October 2026, the list covers:

  • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeated characters or punctuation.
  • Characters from more than one language in the same name.
  • Titles of any kind, professional or religious.
  • Words or phrases used in place of a name.
  • Offensive or suggestive words.

You can change your name every 60 days (Facebook Help). If a change won't go through, check it against this list and make sure 60 days have passed since your last change. A nickname that breaks these rules, like "Bobby the Fisherman", can't be your profile name, but it can make a good Page name.

Where generated names fit on Facebook

Different parts of Facebook follow different rules. Here's where each kind of idea belongs.

Nicknames and other names

If friends know you by a nickname, add it to your profile as an other name so people can find you by it. A short form of your real first name, like Kate for Katherine or Alex for Alexander, can go in the first or middle name field (Facebook Help).

Your Facebook username

Usernames appear in your profile link and can only contain letters, numbers and periods, with at least 5 characters. Periods and capital letters don't make a username unique, so kate.rivera and KateRivera count as the same one (Facebook Help). A clean first name plus last name, or a version with your middle initial or town, is the most useful choice because people can guess it.

A Page for your creator or business identity

Want to post as "Bobby the Fisherman"? Create a Page. Pages can carry brand names, show names and creator names, as long as they follow Facebook's Page name guidelines. Our Facebook Page name generator is tuned for those rules.

Group names

Groups are named for a shared interest or place. Say who it's for and what it's about: "Lake Erie Kayak Anglers" or "Westside Parents Swap". A clear name gets found by the people you want and makes the Group's purpose obvious before anyone joins.

Tips for a Facebook nickname or username

  • Keep it findable. Friends search for the name they know. A username close to your real name helps them land on the right profile.
  • Match your Instagram. Meta says that if your Facebook and Instagram accounts in Accounts Center share the same first and last name, it can help people find you through recommendations (Facebook Help). A matching username makes you easier to recognize, too.
  • Skip the numbers if you can. Usernames may include numbers, but a birth year or a long string makes your link harder to remember and share.
  • Avoid joke usernames you'll regret. Your username sits in your profile link, which you may share with employers, customers or clubs.
  • Use a Page for anything that isn't you. A business, a pet, a band or a fan club needs a Page, not a profile with a made-up name.

Running a Page? Schedule its posts

If your name ideas turned into a Facebook Page, the next step is keeping it active. ViralFarm schedules and publishes Facebook posts from one queue and calendar, along with Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube and X. Draft a post once, adjust the caption for each channel, and pick a time.

Short on post ideas? ViralFarm's AI turns a link, a topic or pasted text into slideshows, pins and text posts based on templates modeled after posts that went viral. The Free plan connects 2 channels with 20 published posts a month, and you don't need a credit card to start.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Facebook name generator free?

Yes. Use it on this page with no sign-up. There's a daily limit per visitor so it stays quick.

Can I use a fake name on Facebook?

No. Facebook asks you to use the name you go by in everyday life, and pretending to be anyone else isn't allowed. You can use a nickname that's a variation of your real name, and you can add other names, like a maiden or professional name, to your profile.

How often can I change my name on Facebook?

Once every 60 days. The new name has to meet Facebook's name standards, so check it for numbers, symbols, titles and unusual capitalization first.

What's the difference between a Facebook name and a username?

Your name is what people see on your profile and next to your posts. Your username is the part of your profile link after facebook.com/. Usernames need at least 5 characters and can only use letters, numbers and periods.

Can I add a nickname to my Facebook profile?

Yes. You can list other names, including a nickname, on your profile. If the nickname is a short form of your real name, like Bob for Robert, you can also use it as your first or middle name.

Can I use this generator for a Facebook Page or Group?

Yes. Describe the Page or Group and you'll get name ideas for it. For business and creator Pages, try our Facebook Page name generator, which is built around Facebook's Page name guidelines.

Why won't Facebook accept my new name?

The usual causes are symbols, numbers, titles, unusual capitalization, characters from more than one language, or words used in place of a name. You also can't change your name again within 60 days of your last change.
