Instagram bio limits and where things go

Instagram's Help Center sets the bio limit at 150 characters and reminds you that anyone can see it (Instagram Help). Letters, spaces, punctuation and emojis all count, so a bio full of emojis has less room for words.

The bio is one of several fields in Edit profile. Knowing which is which saves characters:

  • Name: the bold line at the top of your profile. Use it for your name or brand.
  • Username: your @handle. It's a separate field, so you don't need to repeat it in the bio.
  • Bio: up to 150 characters about who you are and why someone should follow.
  • Links: up to 5 websites, added through Edit profile instead of typed into the bio. Anyone on or off Instagram can see them, and you can reorder them so the most important link comes first (Instagram Help).

This generator writes the bio. All five of its options stay within 150 characters.

What to put in 150 characters

A bio has one job: help a visitor decide to follow within a few seconds. A structure that works for most accounts:

  1. What you do or post. "Small-batch mugs, thrown in Portland." Be specific enough that it couldn't describe a thousand other accounts.
  2. Who it's for or what they get. "Weeknight recipes for two." "Strength training for runners."
  3. A detail that's yours. A credential, a number, a place or a bit of personality.
  4. A call to action. "New drops every Friday." "Free guide below." Point to your link if you have one.

You won't always fit all four, and that's fine. Two strong lines beat four vague ones. If you already know your call to action, type it in the optional box and every bio will end with it.

Instagram bio ideas by account type

Different accounts need different things from a bio. A few patterns, with sample bios like the ones the generator writes:

Creators

Lead with the niche and the payoff. Sample: "Easy sourdough for busy people. One loaf, one schedule, no stress. New bake every Sunday." Someone who found you through a Reel should see right away that the rest of your feed delivers the same thing.

Online shops

Say what you sell, what makes it different and how to buy. Sample: "Hand-poured soy candles in small batches. Ships in 2 days. Shop the fall scents below."

Local businesses

Add the neighborhood and the next step. Sample: "Family bakery in Old Town since 2009. Open Tue to Sun, 7am to 3pm. Order cakes at the link."

Coaches and service providers

Name the result and who you help. Sample: "I help new managers run better 1:1s. Former engineering lead. Free 1:1 template at the link."

Personal accounts

Personality wins here. A few details, a joke or a line you live by is plenty. Leave out anything you don't want strangers to know, because bios are public.

Formatting: line breaks, emojis and fonts

  • Line breaks split a bio into lines people can scan. The generator adds them where they help. If your spacing doesn't paste the way you expect, format it with our Instagram line break generator.
  • Emojis work as bullets and add tone, but each one uses space. One or two that mean something beat a row of sparkles. Turn off Include emojis if you want a text-only bio.
  • Fancy fonts from our Instagram font generator can make one word stand out. Use them sparingly. They're Unicode math symbols, which Unicode says are meant for mathematical notation, not ordinary text (Unicode Standard). Screen readers may skip them or read out names like "mathematical sans-serif" (Scope), and since they aren't plain letters, searches for those words may miss them.
  • Hashtags take characters away from your description. Use one only if it's a branded tag you want people to tap.

Instagram bio mistakes to avoid

  • Vague lines. "Living my best life" and "Dream big" could be anyone. Say what you actually post.
  • Old offers. A bio promoting last month's sale or a sold-out product tells visitors nobody is minding the account.
  • "Link in bio" without a link. If you mention a link, make sure one is on your profile and that it works on a phone.
  • The same bio everywhere. TikTok gives you 80 characters (TikTok Help) and X gives you 160 (X Help), so a bio written for one rarely fits another without edits.
  • Too much at once. Five emojis, three hashtags and two calls to action in 150 characters make it hard to read any of them.

Give profile visitors something to scroll

A sharp bio gets someone to look at your grid. Your posts decide whether they follow. ViralFarm generates Instagram carousels from a link, a topic or pasted text, using templates modeled after posts that went viral, and lets you adjust slides, fonts and brand colors before anything goes live.

It also schedules Reels, Stories and carousels, including Instagram trial reels, alongside TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest and the rest of your channels. The Free plan connects 2 channels, publishes up to 20 posts a month and includes 20 one-time AI credits, no credit card required.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an Instagram bio be?

150 characters. Letters, spaces, punctuation and emojis all count toward the limit. Every bio this generator writes stays within it.

How many links can I add to my Instagram profile?

Up to 5. Add them through Edit profile rather than typing them into your bio, and reorder them so your most important link shows first.

Do emojis count toward the 150-character limit?

Yes. Emojis use space like any other character, so a bio full of them leaves less room for words. Turn off Include emojis in the generator if you want text only.

Can I add line breaks to my Instagram bio?

Yes. Line breaks make a bio easier to scan, and the generator uses them where they help. If your spacing collapses when you paste, format it with our Instagram line break generator first.

Is the Instagram bio generator free?

Yes. No account and no credit card. There's a daily limit per visitor so it stays fast.

How often should I update my Instagram bio?

Whenever something important changes: a new offer, a new focus, a launch or a season. A quick check once a month keeps expired promos off the top of your profile.

Can I use the same bio on TikTok and X?

Not without edits. TikTok bios max out at 80 characters and X bios at 160, so a full 150-character Instagram bio needs trimming for TikTok. Our TikTok and X bio generators write to those limits.
