How to use the Instagram Photo Resizer
- 1Upload or drop a photo. It stays in your browser and is never uploaded.
- 2Pick a size: portrait, square, landscape, Story or Reel, or profile picture.
- 3Choose Fill to crop to the exact size from the center, or Fit to keep the whole photo and pad the edges with a color.
- 4Pick JPG for a smaller file or PNG for lossless quality, then download and post.
Instagram image sizes at a glance
These are the sizes this Instagram picture resizer exports, and what each is for:
- Portrait post, 4:5: 1080×1350. The classic tall feed format and a safe default.
- Portrait post, 3:4: 1080×1440. The tallest shape Instagram keeps without cropping, and the shape most phone cameras shoot.
- Square post, 1:1: 1080×1080. The original Instagram format.
- Landscape post, 1.91:1: 1080×566. The widest ratio the feed accepts.
- Story or Reel, 9:16: 1080×1920. Full-screen vertical.
- Profile picture: 320×320, shown as a circle.
Instagram's Help Center says photos between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keep their original resolution when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which at 1080 pixels wide means a height between 566 and 1440. Narrower photos are enlarged to 320 pixels wide, and wider ones are sized down to 1080 (Instagram Help). Upload at least 1080 pixels wide to get the full resolution. Meta's ad specs recommend 1440 pixels wide for feed and Story ad images (Meta Ads Guide: Feed, Stories), so larger files work too, as long as the shape is right.
Fill or Fit: which to choose
The resizer gives you two ways to get a photo into an Instagram shape:
- Fill (crop) scales the photo until it covers the whole frame, then trims the edges evenly from the center. Use it when your subject is in the middle and you're happy to lose a bit of background.
- Fit (pad) scales the photo until all of it fits, then fills the empty space with a color you pick. Use it when nothing can be cut, like a wide group shot, a screenshot or artwork, or when you want a clean border.
For a profile picture, use Fill and make sure the face or logo is centered. Instagram shows it as a circle, so the corners won't be seen anyway.
Instagram post sizes explained
Each part of Instagram uses a different shape. Here's what to keep in mind for each.
Feed posts and carousels
Portrait posts (4:5 or 3:4) take up the most screen space in the feed, which is why most creators use them. A carousel can hold up to 20 photos and videos (Instagram Help). Resize every slide to the same preset so Instagram doesn't crop some slides differently from others.
Your profile grid
At the time of writing, Instagram's profile grid shows posts as tall rectangles instead of squares, so each post appears there as a center crop. Square and landscape posts lose the most at the sides. Keep important text and faces near the center either way.
Stories and Reels
Both use 9:16 at 1080×1920. Instagram puts your username at the top and reply and action buttons at the bottom, so keep text out of those areas. Meta's guidance for Story ads suggests leaving about 14% clear at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side (Meta Ads Guide), which is a good rule for regular Stories too.
Profile picture
Profile pictures appear as a small circle, so use a square image with the subject centered. Instagram's Help Center doesn't list a profile picture size. The 320×320 preset matches the smallest width Instagram keeps photos at without enlarging them (Instagram Help); a bigger square works too and gives you a little more sharpness on high-density screens.
Why Instagram photos look blurry or cropped
- The photo is too small. Instagram enlarges anything narrower than 320 pixels, and photos under 1080 pixels wide are shared at their lower resolution (Instagram Help).
- The shape is outside Instagram's range. Taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1 and Instagram crops it to a supported ratio, often not where you'd choose.
- It's a screenshot of a photo. Every re-save loses detail. Resize the original instead.
- The file is huge. Instagram sizes anything wider than 1080 pixels down for you. Export at the target size so you control the result, rather than uploading a 50-megapixel original.
- Your phone is saving data. If the Instagram app has a data-saving or upload-quality setting, make sure it allows high-quality uploads.
Formats and file size
Meta's ad specs list JPG and PNG for Instagram images (Meta Ads Guide), while Instagram's publishing API, which scheduling tools use, takes JPEG only (Meta for Developers). For photos, a high-quality JPG is the best choice: it's smaller, uploads faster and looks the same on a phone. Pick PNG for graphics with sharp text, flat colors or logos, where JPG can leave faint smudges around edges.
Meta's ad specs cap images at 30 MB. A 1080-pixel-wide image from this tool is well under that.
Resize less: ViralFarm checks sizes when you schedule
If you schedule posts with ViralFarm, you don't have to resize every image by hand. Before it publishes to Instagram, ViralFarm checks each image against Instagram's limits, converts it to the format Instagram's API needs, and warns you when a photo falls outside the feed's ratio range and will be center-cropped to fit.
You can schedule Instagram feed posts, carousels, Reels and Stories, plus the same content to TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Threads, Facebook, YouTube and X. ViralFarm's AI can also build the carousel for you from a link or a topic.
Frequently asked questions
What size should Instagram photos be?
For feed posts, 1080×1350 (4:5) is the safest choice. Instagram also supports 3:4 at 1080×1440, square at 1080×1080 and landscape at 1080×566. Stories and Reels use 1080×1920.
Does Instagram support 3:4 photos?
Yes. Instagram's Help Center lists 3:4 as the tallest ratio it keeps without cropping, which is 1080×1440 at full width. Use the 1080×1440 preset.
What is the Instagram Story size?
1080×1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical ratio. Reels use the same size. Keep text away from the top and bottom, where Instagram places your name and buttons.
What is the Instagram profile picture size?
Use a square image. Instagram's Help Center doesn't list a profile picture size; 320×320 works, and a bigger square looks a little sharper. Instagram shows it as a circle, so keep the subject centered.
Why does Instagram crop my photo?
Feed photos must fall between 1.91:1 (wide) and 3:4 (tall). Anything outside that range gets cropped to a supported ratio. Resize it to a supported preset first and nothing is cut unexpectedly.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The resizer runs entirely in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded or stored, and the download is created on your device.
Does it add a watermark or need an account?
No watermark and no account. Resize as many photos as you like.
