TikTok image sizes at a glance
TikTok is built for vertical, full-screen viewing on a phone. Here are the sizes that matter:
- Photo mode slides and covers: 1080×1920 (9:16). Fills the whole screen with no bars.
- Square photos: 1080×1080 (1:1). Accepted, but shown with empty space above and below.
- Landscape photos: 1920×1080 (16:9). Accepted, but small on a vertical screen.
- Video: 9:16 vertical. TikTok's ad specs recommend vertical 9:16 video at 540×960 or larger (TikTok Ads Manager); 1080×1920 is the full-HD version of the same shape.
- Profile picture: square, shown as a circle. 720×720 stays sharp on phone screens.
TikTok's own posting API describes the limits for photo posts: JPEG or WebP images up to 1080p and 20 MB each (TikTok for Developers), and up to 35 photos per post (photo post reference).
TikTok profile picture size
TikTok shows your profile picture as a small circle, so the shape matters more than an exact pixel count. Phone screens are dense enough that a small image looks soft, so the 720×720 preset is a good default. The 200×200 preset is there for when you need a small file.
Whatever size you use, upload a square. TikTok crops it to a circle, so keep your face or logo in the middle with a little room around it. Need a logo rather than a photo? Make one with the TikTok logo generator.
Photo mode (carousel) sizing
Photo mode lets you post a swipeable set of images with music. A few rules make carousels look intentional:
- Use 9:16 for every slide. Full-screen slides look like they belong on TikTok; mixed shapes look like a camera roll dump.
- Keep every slide the same size. Consistent framing makes the swipe feel smooth.
- Put text in the middle. TikTok overlays your username and caption at the bottom and the like, comment and share buttons on the right. Text in those areas gets covered.
- Make the first slide count. It's the cover in the feed, so give it the clearest image or the biggest line of text.
Fill vs Fit, and which file format to use
Fill (crop) covers the whole 9:16 frame and trims the edges from the center. It's right for most photos, especially portraits and product shots. Fit (pad) keeps the entire image and fills the gaps with a color you choose. Use it for screenshots, landscape photos and graphics where cropping would cut off something important. A dark or brand-colored pad looks better than white on TikTok.
For format, JPG is the safe choice for photos. If you publish through a scheduler or app that uses TikTok's posting API, note that the API accepts JPEG and WebP, not PNG, for photo posts (TikTok for Developers). PNG is fine for downloads you'll edit further, like a logo you'll add to a video.
Common TikTok sizing mistakes
- Posting horizontal photos as-is. They show as a thin strip in the middle of the screen. Resize to 9:16 with Fit if you can't crop.
- Using a tiny profile picture. A 200×200 crop from a group photo looks blurry. Start from a sharp, close image.
- Text at the very bottom of slides. The caption covers it.
- Mixing shapes in one carousel. The jump from square to vertical breaks the flow.
- Re-saving screenshots. Each screenshot loses detail. Resize the original image instead.
Schedule TikTok photo posts with ViralFarm
Resizing one photo is quick; doing it for every slide of every post adds up. ViralFarm generates TikTok slideshows with AI from a link, a topic or pasted text, on templates modeled after posts that went viral. When you schedule photos, it converts them to a format TikTok's API accepts and scales them to fit TikTok's 1080p limit.
You can publish straight to TikTok or send posts to your TikTok drafts to add a sound first. The same queue schedules Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Threads, Facebook, YouTube and X.
Frequently asked questions
What is the TikTok profile picture size?
Use a square image, since TikTok shows it as a circle. A 720×720 square stays sharp on phone screens; the 200×200 preset is there for when you need a small file.
What size should TikTok photo mode images be?
1080×1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical ratio. That fills the screen. TikTok also accepts square and landscape photos, but they show with empty space around them.
How many photos can a TikTok photo post have?
TikTok's posting API accepts up to 35 photos in one photo post. Keep them all the same size so the carousel swipes smoothly.
Can I post horizontal photos on TikTok?
Yes, but they appear small with bars above and below. For full-screen impact, resize to 9:16. Use Fit to keep the whole photo with a colored background, or Fill to crop it.
Why does my TikTok photo look blurry?
Usually the source is too small, it was screenshotted, or it was stretched to fill the screen. Start from the original photo, resize to 1080×1920, and export as JPG.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The resizer runs in your browser. Your images are never uploaded or stored, and there is no watermark or account.
Should TikTok photos be JPG or PNG?
JPG for photos. It keeps files small and looks the same after TikTok's compression. If you post through a tool that uses TikTok's posting API, JPG matters more: the API takes JPEG and WebP for photo posts, not PNG.
What size is a TikTok cover image?
Design covers at 1080×1920, the same 9:16 size as the post. Your profile grid shows covers cropped to a shorter rectangle, so keep the title text near the middle of the frame.
