How to use the X (Twitter) Name Generator

  1. 1Describe your account: what you post, who you are or what you are building.
  2. 2Pick a style. Minimal and Professional suit founders and brands; Fun and Bold suit personal accounts.
  3. 3Optional: add words to include, like your name or your product.
  4. 4Click Generate names. Every idea arrives with an @ and is 15 characters or fewer.
  5. 5Copy one, then open Settings and privacy, Account, Username on X to see if it is free.

X username vs. display name

X profiles show two names, one above the other. The username (or handle) is the @name: unique, shown in replies and in your profile link, and limited to 15 characters. The display name sits above it, can be up to 50 characters, and can be anything from your real name to a business name to something playful. You can change your display name whenever you like (X Help).

That split is useful. Your handle has to be short and strict, so let it be the memorable part. Your display name has room for context: "Sam Ortiz | Building a budgeting app" fits easily in 50 characters.

This generator writes handles. Describe your account and you get 12 ideas, each 15 characters or fewer, using only letters, numbers and underscores. It's free, needs no sign-up and runs on Claude. It can't see X's database, so check availability before you announce anything.

X username rules to know first

From X's Help Center, checked in October 2026:

  • Length: more than 4 characters and no more than 15 (X Help).
  • Characters: letters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9 and underscores. No spaces, dashes or other symbols (X Help).
  • Reserved or held names: X says usernames containing "Admin" or the platform's own name can't be claimed unless the account is an official X account, and a handle that seems free may still belong to a suspended or deactivated account (X Help).
  • Changing handles: your followers, Direct Messages and replies stay with you when you change your username. Your old username becomes available for anyone to claim right away (X Help).

X's own tip for a taken name is to add an underscore before or after it (X Help). That works, but a meaningful word usually beats a stray underscore, as you'll see below.

X handle styles for different accounts

What makes a good handle depends on why people follow you. Some patterns by account type, with made-up examples:

Founders and builders

Tie the handle to you, not to one product, because products change. First name plus a short word works: "@sam_builds", "@nora_ships". If you want a product handle too, make it a separate account.

Writers and newsletter authors

Match your newsletter name if it's short, or use your byline. "@weeklyfieldnotes" is 16 characters, so it won't fit. "@fieldnotesweek" or "@fieldnotes_hq" will. Count before you fall in love with a name.

Creators and personalities

Your audience follows you, so your name or nickname is the strongest handle. Add a niche word only if the plain name is taken: "@lenacooks", "@marco_lifts".

Brands and shops

Use the brand name exactly when you can. If it's taken, add hq, co, shop or app. Avoid numbers, which make you look like an imitation account next to the real one.

Meme, humor and anonymous accounts

These can be stranger, but they still need to be typeable. A short coined word or a two-word joke is easier to remember than a sentence with the vowels removed.

How to fit a good name into 15 characters

Fifteen characters goes fast. A few ways to make a name fit without turning it into alphabet soup:

  • Cut filler words. "the", "real", "official" and "its" rarely earn their space.
  • Use an underscore as a space. "@nora_ships" reads faster than "@noraships" and costs one character.
  • Shorten the second word, not the first. People remember how a name starts. "@fieldnotes_hq" beats "@fn_weekly".
  • Don't drop vowels at random. "@grdnng_tps" saves a few characters and costs every reader a second look.
  • Avoid look-alike characters. l, I and 1, and O and 0, are easy to confuse in many fonts.
  • Let the display name carry the rest. You have 50 characters there for your full name, role or tagline (X Help).

Before you change your X handle

Changing your handle takes a minute, but it has side effects worth planning for:

  1. Tell your followers first. X suggests a heads-up so people know where to send replies and Direct Messages (X Help).
  2. Update your links. Your profile link changes with your handle. Check your website, newsletter, email signature and other profiles.
  3. Remember your old handle goes public. X makes it available to everyone the moment you switch. If someone could use it to pose as you, think about that before you change.
  4. Keep your display name steady. Changing your handle and display name on the same day can make followers think a stranger took over the account.

Post on schedule once your handle is set

ViralFarm schedules and publishes to X alongside TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Threads, Facebook and YouTube, so your X posts go out from the same queue and calendar as everything else. If your account has X Premium, ViralFarm supports long posts too.

Need help with what to post? ViralFarm's AI can turn a link, a topic or pasted text into text posts, and our free X character counter checks length before you publish. The Free plan connects 2 channels and publishes up to 20 posts a month, no credit card required.

Frequently asked questions

Is the X name generator free?

Yes. There's no sign-up and no credit card. A daily limit per visitor keeps the tool fast for everyone.

Is an X name generator the same as a Twitter name generator?

Yes. Twitter became X, and the handle rules carried over: up to 15 characters, using only letters, numbers and underscores. Every name from this tool works as a handle on X.

How long can an X username be?

X's Help Center says a username must be more than 4 characters long and can be up to 15. Your display name, the name shown above your handle, can be up to 50 characters.

Can I use emojis or symbols in my X handle?

No. Handles can only use letters, numbers and underscores. If you want an emoji or a separator like a vertical bar, put it in your display name, which is far more flexible.

Will I lose followers if I change my X username?

No. X says changing your username doesn't affect your followers, Direct Messages or replies. Your old username does become available to other people immediately, though.

What if the handle I want is taken?

Try an underscore between words, a short suffix like hq or co, a shorter second word, or a niche word that describes what you post. Put your preferred name in the "Words to include" box and the generator will build variations around it.

Does the generator check whether a handle is available?

No. It can't see X's database. Enter your favorite under Settings and privacy, then Account, then Username, and X will tell you if it's taken.
